Old Field Farm is an historic Long Island show grounds with a rich equestrian heritage. Situated on 13 acres in the historic Three Village area and bordered by 88 acres of protected wetlands, the property lies within a region designated by New York State as an Outstanding Natural Coastal Area (ONCA).
In 1931, Long Island philanthropist Ward Melville established Old Field Farm, originally known as the North Shore Horse Show Grounds. Melville commissioned renowned architect Richard Haviland Smythe to design an equestrian facility that would take advantage of its picturesque waterfront setting along Long Island’s North Shore. The Main Barn, courtyard, freestanding stables, and grandstand were all built in the Colonial Revival style, creating a distinctive and enduring architectural landmark.
For more than fifty years, Old Field Farm welcomed thousands of riders, trainers, and spectators to its equestrian competitions, becoming a cherished destination for the Long Island horse community. Hugh J.B. Cassidy acquired the property in 1982, and after his untimely death, the property was acquired by Suffolk County in 1986 to preserve it from commercial development. In the years that followed, the facility fell into disrepair and remained vacant for an extended period.
In 1996, Suffolk County began seeking an organization capable of undertaking the extensive restoration needed to return Old Field Farm to its former prominence. That vision is now being realized through the efforts of Old Field Farm, Ltd., a nonprofit organization established specifically to restore, preserve, and operate this historic county parkland.
Working in partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Old Field Farm, Ltd. has undertaken significant improvements to revitalize the grounds and expand opportunities for equestrian competition, education, and community engagement. In 2016, Old Field Farm was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Old Field Farm continues its proud tradition as a gathering place for equestrians and horse enthusiasts while serving as a vibrant center for community events and horse shows on Long Island.
